This West African ex-French colony has begun to emerge onto the eco tourist map with travel journalists regularly featuring it as an exciting new destination. Gabon has an astonishing variety of wildlife - the only place in the world you can see lowland gorilla, hippos surfing the waves and humpback whales all in the same day. And now it aims to become the Costa Rica of Africa.

While Gabon is rich in oil and minerals, President Bongo has had the foresight to invest in the country's other great commodity - it's magnificent wildlife. This exciting country is really opening up now, and whilst the accommodation on offer is not quite of the same standard found in Eastern and Southern Africa, the unique combination of rare animals in unusual habitats makes for an adventure which would be impossible to experience anywhere else in the world.
